How to Tell If a Pokémon Card Is Fake
Counterfeit Pokémon cards can look convincing. No single visual test is universal, so authentication should combine observations and, when appropriate, professional verification.
Check Printing
Look for unusual colors, fonts, borders, alignment and image quality. Compare suspicious cards with reliable references from the same set and card number.
Inspect Construction
Compare thickness, surface feel and overall construction with a known genuine card. Avoid destructive tests when preservation matters.
Verify Set Details
Check set symbol, card number, rarity, Pokémon name, attacks and other printed details.
Check the Source
Seller reputation, packaging, transaction history and unusual pricing provide useful context.
Use a Consistent Process
For legitimate cards you plan to grade, use the PSA 10 Evaluation Checklist + Card Conditioning Guide.
