Revenue is not profit. If you buy Pokémon cards to resell, your decision should be based on what remains after every meaningful cost.
The basic profit formula
Profit = Sale Price − Purchase Cost − Grading Cost − Selling Fees − Shipping/Materials − Other Direct Costs
Track the purchase cost
For a single card, record exactly what you paid. For a collection purchase, allocate the cost across the cards you intend to sell so you can evaluate each outcome.
Add grading and selling costs
If you grade, include the grading fee and your shipping or insurance costs. If you sell through a marketplace, include the applicable selling fees and any payment-related costs.
Compare raw and graded outcomes
Do not assume a higher sale price automatically makes grading worthwhile. Compare the expected graded result with the amount you could make selling the card raw.
The PSA Flipping System is designed for this buy-grade-sell decision. For ongoing records, use the Trading Card Inventory Tracker and Sales Dashboard + Business Tracker.
Measure ROI, not just dollars
A useful second metric is return on investment: ROI = Profit ÷ Total Invested Cost × 100. Tracking both profit and ROI helps you compare a $5 card flip with a $100 card flip fairly.
Build a feedback loop
Record your purchase assumptions, actual grade, sale price, fees, and final profit. After enough transactions, you can identify the sets, conditions, and buying strategies that actually work for your business.
Bottom line
A profitable Pokémon flipping system is a numbers system. Track the complete transaction, learn from the outcome, and use that data to improve your next buy.
